Joining Zoom as a Student
Join early to test your microphone and camera before the course starts.
It is recommended to participate in the course using a computer and not a mobile device .
If you do use a mobile device, you will have to download the Zoom app before joining.
Follow the link that was sent to you to access the course.
Join the class using both audio and video.
Best Practices While using Zoom
Join early to test your microphone and camera before the course starts.
Mute your audio when you are not talking.
Turn off your camera if you step away from your computer.
Make sure you have good internet connection. Use
speedtest.net
to check your connection.
Set up your work space in a quiet room.
Make sure your screen name matches the name you registered with.
Use multiple monitors if screen sharing.
Be prepared to take notes.
Always be respectful.
Turn Off/On your Audio and Video
It is recommended to turn off your audio when you are not speaking.
Turn off your camera if you step away from your computer to avoid distractions to other class members.
Use Chat, Polls, and Non-Verbal Cues to Communicate
Use the chat within Zoom to engage with other students and your facilitator.
You can choose whether to message the facilitator or all participants.
Attach files within the chat.
Polls may be used as a testing option.
Use nonverbal cues to engage with your speaker. You can raise your hand, answer yes or no, and request the facilitator talk faster or slower.
Use reactions to give a thumbs up or applause.
Interacting in a Breakout Room
A notification will show in the Zoom window, inviting you to join a breakout room.
You can chat with your group and attach files.
You can also use nonverbal cues to communicate with your group.
The facilitator can be invited to your group to answer any questions.
Adjust your Audio and Video Settings
Test your audio and video settings before the class starts.
It is recommended to use a headset or direct audio connection to reduce background noise and interference.
It is recommended to set up your workspace in a quiet room to minimize distractions to other participants.
Set your video settings or chose an external camera.
Set virtual backgrounds and touch up your appearance.
Test your Internet Speed Before Using Zoom
Use
speedtest.net
to test your internet connection before joining the Zoom meeting.
The upload and download Mbps should be a minimum of three to ensure a steady connection.
It is recommended to join the internet from your home, as public Wi-Fi can be unreliable.
Switch from Gallery to Speaker View
Gallery view will show all the participants on the screen at once.
Speaker view switches between the current active speakers on the screen.
Hide non-video participants from your gallery view.
Pin a video if you want to focus your video feed on one participant.
Screen Sharing on Zoom
Engage your audience by sharing materials, websites, or videos with them.
Screen sharing can be used with any programs and to show videos.
